5 months | A Letter to My Daughter

Hey sweet girl, First of all, I am only a DAY late! One! (well, two once this gets published, but its an improvement!) Maybe next month I'll get it done on time, but only if it doesn't take away from time with you.:)  I hate having my face in front of electronics while you are awake. Which brings me to the second thing…

You are asleep right now! You are in your new crib, napping, by yourself. What a huge (bittersweet!) milestone for your fifth month. It is such a big deal for so many reasons. Foremost amongst those, as much as I love holding you while you sleep, I never really felt like you got peaceful, truly restful sleep. Occasionally your head would slip off my shoulder, or I would sneeze and wake you, or I would have to get up to answer the gazillion doorbell rings from various contractors working on her house. Though it was precious time with you, it was not what was probably best for your body to rest and rejuvenate. Otherwise, I may have been content to hold you while you napped until you were 10.

Another thing that really began to eat at me, as I just mentioned, is that I hated the idea of working on my computer, or doing laundry, or doing anything really, in the few moments that you are awake. You don't stay awake but an hour or so at a time before getting sleepy again, and I was really wanting that time to be filled with play, and books, and attention from your mom. I realized that couldnt happen with me frantically trying to get a few things done before it was time for us to go back to your room to nap.

So, as content as I was to snuggle in the rocker with you three times a day, we all knew it was time to help you sleep better. And you've done so well. The first few days you cried, a lot, when put down into your crib. I would go in and pat your tummy and whisper to you every 5, 10, 15 minutes, but there were just some days where I took you out and held you, or didn't even put you down at all. On the fifth day (yesterday) you took three naps in  your crib, and one nap on me…and that was only because I wanted to hold you.

I'm not going to assume that we will never have nap time struggles again, but for how much you love to be held, I think it is awesome progress for you.

My favorite thing is going in to see you when you wake up. I can hear you whimper and cry, but then I walk in to this:

In the third picture you're kind of getting that sad little chin tremble….I feel like you are thinking "ok mom, now would you please pick me up?!"

This picture below was the first day, when I used your new mobile we bought you. It is one of those soothing ones with light projection and soft noise, etc. And all you did was lay in your crib and stare at it. I'm glad you liked it, but we haven't used it since. :)

So, enough about sleep for now. Here's a few more pictures from the past month:

You have really started enjoying being around your brother. He loves reading to you, and seeing you in the morning. You smile when he comes around, and you seem to think he's pretty amusing.

www.breelinne.com

You've started putting all your toys in your mouth. You haven't up until recently been able to grab on to things and direct them where you want them to go, but its getting easier for you. Which means all your toys are getting nibbled on. You never took a pacifier, but you do love chewing on things.

www.breelinne.com

You rolled over for the first time! Front to back. You reallllly want to roll back to front, but it's been a little tougher for you. What it means though is that you are constantly laying with your little legs in the air trying to flip over. It's pretty cute. It's like the second I lay you on your back, your legs pop up, then you roll to the side.

www.breelinne.com

You sat in the bumbo for the first time. It's still a little tough for you to stay upright longer than a couple minutes, but it's just so surreal to see you sitting up.

Lastly, I've noticed a pattern in your personality...You are very vocal at home, and very quiet when we are out. I don't know that it really means anything, but I think it's interesting!

Last night for instance...we went to eat at a Mexican restaurant-the same restaurant we ate at exactly 5 months ago, the night before you were born :) -and you were so quiet. We were gone about 2.5 hours, which is a pretty long stretch awake for you, yet you were entirely calm. Two or three people stopped by our table and told us what a sweet  baby we had. (Not that you aren't sweet when you are cranky or fussy though!)

On the other hand, when we are home, you are so animated. Not fussing or crying necessarily, but you like to "talk." It usually consists of a lot of really high-pitched squeals…your dad has said before you sound like a dolphin. :)  And animated noises = animated expressions.  The pictures below are from one of these "conversations."

We moved this month! It was really sad for me to leave the house we brought you home to, but it was so small and we were busting at the seams, and it was time. Plus we had to be out by the 31st!

The floors at the new house had just been finished, so everything had to be moved into the garage. Your Uncle Jacob, Aunt Rachel, and Grandpop all helped. It was cold. The fumes from the floors were too strong for you to stay there, so we had to stay in a motel. You and I were in one room, your brother and Grandpop were in another, and your dad was at the house on an air mattress taking care of the dogs. There was an ice storm moving in, and you and I both got very little sleep. It was such a frustrating night in that motel! You went to bed around 8:30, and I read for a little bit and then fell asleep around 9:30. Then, around 11:00, the guests down the hall began to really get loud. I never fell back asleep because I was so stressed about you waking up. Their party lasted until about 2:30 in the morning, and woke you about five times. Was not my ideal way to spend your first New Year's, but I will always remember it!

This is you at lunch on the day of the move (with your beloved rattle), and visiting your new room.

On that note, you finally have a crib! We ordered it over the summer, but didn't have any place to store it at the old house, and hadn't had a chance to pick it up since we moved here. I often get discouraged that I didn't get to do the normal "nesting" things, like decorating a nursery for you, because we knew we weren't staying in that house. Now that we are in and finally have all your furniture I can't wait to make some things for your room.

I will end here, because I know I could keep talking and talking. Happy 5 months Adalyn! You are so special and so loved and we thank God every day for you.

Love,

your mom

4 months | A Letter To My Daughter

DSC_2401 Gosh. You are a dream, baby girl. Despite what the numerous meltdowns I've had this week may say about me, I absolutely love being a mom. And I love being your mom.

And since we're technically in your 5th month (!) I won't go into detail yet about what a massively chaotic few weeks its been. That can wait til next time.

For now, I'll just talk about last month, and I'm going to try and practice a little brevity this time since I  want to get this done before it's time for the next letter. You are so perfect, and such a joy, and in the midst of my most bleak times, your smile and your laugh make EVERYTHING melt away. It's like magic.

Here are some pictures from your fourth month.

You discovered your feet this month...

And your hands...

You got a little better at tummy time. Previously, 30 seconds would pass and you'd be over it. We got a few minutes out of you here and there last month!

I feel like here you are ok...maybe a little resigned to the fact that you're going to have to stay that way for a bit:

breelinne.com

And now you are beginning to look at me impatiently. And no matter how ridiculous it is, the last picture still breaks my heart.breelinne.com

You took your first trip to the Hill Country, to visit my hometown and your grandpop. That trip was rough. You did not want to sleep, and I remember getting out of the car physically sore from tension; from hearing you cry so much. I know babies cry; but that doesn't make it anymore fun to hear your baby cry.

We stopped in Marble Falls finally to eat and look at Christmas lights. More pictures from this trip when we get to the iPhone pics.

One of my oldest and best friends came to meet you while we were down (again, more pics in a sec), and she gave you two of the most gorgeous baby dresses I've ever seen. You went to your first Christmas Cantata at church the next weekend and wore this one:

Agh! I wouldn't make you do it if it wasn't good for you!

And here are some of your Christmas PJ's, that I'm still putting you in by the way, because its too sad to me that you'll never wear them again.

Your love for this rattle just continues to intensify. It was recommended by a lady in one of the baby boutiques we registered it as being good for babies development, and it is seriously awesome. You love it.

Your brother turned 6, which means you went to your first birthday party! I love your face…you were just taking it all in.

breelinne.com

Long ago your dad and I talked about trying to stay put for Christmas every year so you and Ian could make special memories in your home, and for the past few Christmases all your grandparents had come to stay with us for the holidays. This year, since we were moving, we spent Christmas with your  grandparents in Abilene...it was nice to go to a home that looked and smelled like Christmas, because ours certainly did not. All our decorations were in storage, and all we had was a bare tree that we were giving to someone else after the holiday was over. It was pretty bleak. Not exactly how I had imagined your first December.

Some pictures of our visit:

breelinne.com

I know putting a picture of me nursing you is kind of weird, but your grandma took it, and when I saw it on my camera it just completely summed up that time for me. Being away from the craziness of moving, spending some downtime with you in someone else's home..it was a welcome respite.

More pics of you and I! These don't happen very often...

Doesn't matter how blurry;these are so precious to me.

breelinne.com

And then there's this :)

breelinne.com

This trip was the first time you really got to spend some extended time with your uncle Jacob and aunt Rachel. Which is weird, because we're so close (literally and figuratively!). But I'm thankful for it!

Christmas morning you did pretty well! You opened all your presents and made it to about 10:30 until the sleepy dust took over.

breelinne.com

Now the iPhone pics. Always hate that I have so many more of these, but am also immensely grateful that I do!

It got pretty cold last month! I love these puffy footies…your dad makes fun of me.

Your wake-up faces:

And these are the pictures of you meeting Jenn for the first time!

You are only 4 months old and you've already been to two of our most favorite restaurants! :)

Flores, above…and Salt Lick, below. Plus more wake-up faces.

So, this month was easily defined by sleep, or lack thereof.

This month was the month we began a bedtime routine with you. And you like it! You get a bath, you get fed, you get a story, the Bible, some lavender, and you're out. You sleep very well at night, and we are so thankful for that. And you are so happy in the mornings.

But you don't like to nap. You kinda refuse to, unless you're being held. And even then you put up a pretty big fight. From what I've been reading though, and hearing from other people, that's not too unusual, and I wasn't about to start trying to nap train you during the craziness of moving combined with the travel of the holidays. So, we held you. And we took walks. And we drove around. Whatever we could do to get you a couple naps throughout the day.

breelinne.com

I would even walk around the driveway with you some days just because the cool air calmed you down. The first picture is us on a walk around the playground while your brother played. I think you had just woken up. But the second picture is just us standing on the front porch. You would not sleep, and you look exhausted and worn out. :(

Your dad was home for two weeks for Christmas break, and you napped on him so easily. During those couple of weeks you got two or three really good naps in with him each day while I packed. The last picture above is after one of those. You're always so content with him holding you.

This was a Christmas afternoon walk to burn off all the goodies. You didn't sleep, but we got some cute pictures!

Happy four months sweet Adalyn. What they say is true…it is all going by way too fast. I love you so so so much.

Love,

your mom.

3 months! | A Letter to My Daughter

DSC_1530 I wish I had a better picture here, because you were ALL about smiles this month! But I really wanted one that showed your whole little body so I could see how much you are growing! (Even though I want you to stay little forever).

Anyways, will I EVER do one of these on time? You were three months old three days ago, but we were traveling, and you got your first cold, and I just like spending time with you more than I like being on the computer.

But I do love writing to you and your brother here. It ensures that I take the time to document and appreciate the little moments, and I love looking back through pictures.

This has been such a big month it seems! You are so much fun, and are such a sweet, lovey girl. You have started cooing, and it is the best sound ever. I really do think you laugh, too.

You love the morning time, and are full of smiles when you wake up. You are not a fan of the evening, however. Right about 5:00 every day you get pretty agitated with everything. Walks help. And being outside.

You're pretty easy to figure out... You only cry when you are hungry, tired, or in the carseat….you hate being in the car.  And your cries are pretty distinct...your hungry cry is loud and throaty, and your tired cry is drawn out and whimper-y. Your tired cry is kind of heart-wrenching.

You smile at everyone, but I do believe you think your dad is the funniest. He goofs around with you a lot and gets lots of big smiles. And your big brother loves you so much. He always asks to hold you, and he loves borrowing my phone to take pictures of you.

I love your coos, your soft chubby cheeks, and naps with you on my chest.

Even when I am tired, I love picking your snuggly, warm little body up in the middle of the night when you are hungry.

I love taking walks outside with you in your wrap or carrier.

I gave up chocolate for you!

And, I'm still drinking tons of sweet tea…this has been one of my biggest cravings since becoming pregnant with you. I gave up caffeinated coffee long ago, but I just can't quit the sweet tea.

Here are some pictures and some thoughts about your THIRD month. Time does just fly!

This month….

You started SMILING! Holy cow, is there is anything better in the world?? Your smile lights up your whole face, and it makes my heart totally explode.

You moved out of your swaddle. This was kind of sad for me. You have loved being swaddled  since the day you were born, but all of a sudden you started kicking out of your blanket (who only your dad could get tight enough), and you didn't like the pre-made swaddles. I am terrified of loose things in your crib, so out the swaddle blanket went. You are now wearing a sleep sack, and seem to really like too.

You met both of your great-grandmothers this month. I feel so fortunate that they have been able to meet you and be a part of your life.

You were "in" your first wedding. Your uncle Jacob got married, and you were a flower girl. You slept in Aunt Sue's arms the whole time, but you did good!

You met so many of my aunts and uncles and close family friends at the wedding. It was really a fun weekend, and I'm extremely grateful that so many of them were able to come down and visit.

You started noticing your toys! You really watch them when we play with you, and you started being able to grasp a couple things too.

You got your first cold :( It's terrible seeing you uncomfortable.

Now for pictures!

This outfit below is sentimental to me…it is the very first thing piece of clothing I ever bought you. Your grandma and I went on a girls trip to Salado in May, and we had so much fun looking at stuff for you. This little newborn onesie was my first purchase. Then, your dad decided to use it as his "emergency outfit" in his diaper bag, so it got stuffed away and forgotten about. Fortunately once I found it it still fit you, and you've been wearing it every day since. ;)  not really...

blog1

Texas weather…beginning of the month we were taking walks like this; end of the month you're bundled up in full-body fleece.

blog2Apparently I really like this outfit! I thought the second picture was cute…looks like you're punching your brother in the nose. :)

blog3Thats Ian with my phone...

blog4

So one of the things I dread most is packing up each stage of clothing. Just the thought that you grow SO fast and these tiny outfits will soon be too small. So I told myself I was going to try and photograph each outfit. Some are with my good camera; some are with my phone…but my goal is just to document it!

blog7

These fancy outfits are your dad's purchases... I much prefer the casual one-piece footies and the like, but your dad is your dad….

Visit from Grandma and Grandpa Larry….

blog8

It decided to get bitterly cold here one week, and we were entirely unprepared. So you wore socks as gloves.

blog10

I started making you some headbands this month….hoping to maybe sell some to support you and I staying home together next semester. :) You were an excellent model!

blog11

You do not like tummy time, so this is a rare moment below….

And I just thought the last picture was cute.

blog12

Now for the iPhone pics. So grateful for such a portable camera!

blogi1

You got your first round of shots. If it helps you figure out how much you hated it, you took a pacifier afterwards. And I've NEVER been able to get you to take a pacifier.

The last picture is when you tasted infant tylenol for the first time.

Your brother loves holding you.

Your grandpop came down a few days early for Jacobs wedding to help us with the house.

Second picture is what you wore home from  the hospital. It finally fits you so you wore it to Jacobs rehearsal dinner.
